Advocacy Media Workshop

In early 2014, Rodrigo Dorfman, working with Peter Eversoll and NC Field, offered a six-week media advocacy workshop in Kinston, Lenoir County, North Carolina, to a small group of migrant worker youth. The group was capacitated in the art of multimedia storytelling as a means to empower them to become active participants in their communities in an age of digital information. In this case the youth created a series of multimedia elements of a media advocacy campaign centered on raising awareness around the issue of child labor in the tobacco industry.

These are the same youth that helped Human Rights Watch gather much of the evidence for their 138-page report, “Tobacco’s Hidden Children: Hazardous Child Labor in US Tobacco Farming,” that documents conditions for children working on tobacco farms in the United States.

“After finishing the workshop I am a better advocate because I feel that I now have the necessary tools to inform the public about children in the fields”  José
