MURALIST!
This group exhibit at the Carrack Modern Art, featured 11 local artists that were intimately involved in the process of creating the Durham Civil Rights History Mural. This three year-long project, organized by Brenda Miller Holmes and documented by Rodrigo Dorfman, brought together members of the Durham community from across the widest possible spectrum.
The creation of the Durham Civil Rights Mural was in itself an historical event. The Mural was the first publicly funded art by the City of Durham. Also, the Mural was created through a collaborative process that served as a model of how we use art as a means to bring together a community around difficult conversations about race/class and the urgency of the present.
Since this Mural was a pilot program it was essential to continue this conversation past the Mural dedication into the public sphere. So, the Mural sets the stage to bring to the front the essential need for publicly funded art in Durham. The Muralist! Project, served as a catalyst in this conversation. Also, the public had the pleasure of experiencing more deeply this process by interacting with the individual work of artists who contributed to the Mural.
